Bitcoin Whipsaws as US Jobs Data Rattles Fed Rate Bets, Crypto Market Cools to $2.78 Trillion

A stronger-than-expected US jobs report sent Bitcoin below $80,000 before traders cut September rate-hike bets back to a coin flip and pushed it above $81,000 — only for the broader crypto market to cool again heading into the weekend, with the sector-wide cap slipping to $2.78 trillion.

Bitcoin Whipsaws as US Jobs Data Rattles Fed Rate Bets, Crypto Market Cools to $2.78 Trillion

A Jobs Report Shakes Up Rate Expectations

The US economy added 162,000 nonfarm payrolls in August, well above the roughly 56,000 economists had expected, while unemployment held at 4.1%. The upside surprise gave Federal Reserve hawks fresh ammunition ahead of the central bank's meeting later this month, and traders responded by pricing in a higher probability of a September rate increase. Bitcoin reacted almost immediately, slipping about 2% and briefly dropping back below the $80,000 level as investors reassessed the odds of tighter monetary policy.

Rate-Hike Odds Fade, Bitcoin Reclaims $81,000

The move didn't last. By Friday, traders had sharply pared back their rate-hike bets, with futures tracked by the CME FedWatch tool putting the odds of a September increase at roughly even — down from more than 63% earlier in the week. As bond yields eased, risk appetite returned across the crypto market: Bitcoin rose about 4% to top $81,000, while privacy coin Zcash led the rally with a near-15% daily gain and roughly 20% over the week. Ether, BNB, dogecoin, XRP and Hyperliquid's HYPE also posted solid advances. US spot Bitcoin ETFs added around $277 million in provisional inflows that session, though analysts noted a single day of buying isn't yet enough to confirm sustained institutional demand.

The Market Cools Again Into the Weekend

The rebound proved short-lived. According to CoinGecko data recorded on the morning of September 5, the total crypto market capitalization fell 1.3% to $2.78 trillion, with Bitcoin trading around $76,657 — down 1.6% over 24 hours — and Ethereum also retreating. Total trading volume across the market came in near $98.5 billion. Bitcoin's dominance held steady at 57.6%, with Ethereum's share at roughly 10.8%. Stablecoins and decentralized finance (DeFi) activity were comparatively steady: the stablecoin market cap edged up 0.2% to $291.2 billion, and overall sentiment gauges remained in "Greed" territory despite the pullback.

What It Means for US Investors

The past 48 hours are a reminder of how tightly crypto prices are now tracking US macro data. A single jobs report was enough to swing Bitcoin by several thousand dollars in either direction, and the Fed's September decision — still roughly a toss-up in the eyes of the futures market — remains the single biggest catalyst on the calendar. For now, ETF flows and stablecoin activity suggest institutional participation hasn't disappeared, but traders looking for a clear directional signal will likely need to wait for the Fed itself to speak.
