Bitcoin's Rare Winning Streak Meets BlackRock's AI Thesis: What It Means for US Crypto Markets

Bitcoin's Rare Winning Streak Meets BlackRock's AI Thesis: What It Means for US Crypto Markets

Bitcoin Approaches a Streak Not Seen Since 2012

Bitcoin is trading near $87,000 as of Wednesday, September 23, holding gains that put it on track for a rare three-month winning streak. The asset rose 4.8% in July and 25.2% in August, and September is currently up roughly 10.9%. The only other time Bitcoin posted consecutive July-through-September gains was in 2012, when it climbed 41%, 6.4%, and 24.4% in those same months. That earlier streak was followed by a sharp October pullback of nearly 10%, before Bitcoin launched into a rally exceeding 2,000% over the following months. Analysts caution that today's market — now a multi-trillion-dollar asset class with deep institutional participation, spot and derivatives liquidity, and regulated investment vehicles — bears little resemblance to the thinly traded market of 2012, making a repeat of that scale unlikely even if the seasonal pattern holds.

Institutional Money Keeps Flowing Through US ETFs

The rally has coincided with heavy activity in US spot Bitcoin ETFs, which recently pulled in close to $1 billion in net inflows in a single day. That kind of institutional demand has become a defining feature of this cycle, reinforcing the view that Bitcoin's price action is now driven less by retail speculation and more by regulated capital moving through exchange-traded products.

BlackRock Argues AI Could Become Crypto's Next Demand Driver

Separately, BlackRock published new research arguing that the artificial intelligence boom — often blamed for pulling investor attention away from crypto — could actually become one of its biggest tailwinds. The asset manager's thesis centers on the idea that AI and crypto, though they developed independently, are now converging as autonomous software increasingly interacts with financial systems. BlackRock describes digital assets as "machine-native money" suited to a world where AI agents can plan multistep tasks, interact with outside services, and execute payments on their own.

Stablecoins and Tokenized Compute Take Center Stage

According to BlackRock, traditional payment rails like ACH aren't well suited to the frequent, small, always-on transactions that autonomous AI agents are expected to generate, since they require onboarding steps that don't fit machine-to-machine commerce. Stablecoins, which settle around the clock on public blockchains such as Ethereum, are positioned as the more natural fit. The firm pointed to several emerging frameworks built for this shift, including Coinbase's x402 protocol, the Agentic Commerce Protocol developed by Stripe and OpenAI, Google's Agent Payments Protocol, and Visa's Trusted Agent Protocol.

BlackRock's outlook extends beyond payments. The firm suggests that the enormous computing capacity AI models require — and the high cost of the GPUs and data centers behind it — could give rise to an entirely new asset class: standardized, tokenized claims on future computing capacity, traded on-chain in a manner similar to established commodity markets.

What It Means for the US Market

Taken together, the two developments point to a US crypto market being shaped by two forces at once: a historically rare price pattern drawing renewed institutional flows into Bitcoin, and a structural argument from one of the world's largest asset managers that AI's growth could open entirely new categories of on-chain demand. For US investors and institutions, the coming weeks — particularly how Bitcoin behaves heading into October — may offer an early read on whether both narratives hold up.
