Pros

  • Function stated plainly: non-custodial fixed-rate collateralised lending modelled on tri-party repo
  • Loans matched through weekly sealed-bid Term Auctions, over-collateralised on-chain
  • Six auditors named and dated: Sigma Prime, Runtime Verification, Dedaub and ChainLight
  • Collateral health and liquidations monitored on-chain by the protocol contracts

Cons

  • The contract licence is Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 — a non-commercial, no-derivatives licence, not open source
  • Fee amounts did not render on the fees page; only the two fee types are named
  • Governance and upgradeability are not stated on the intro page read
  • Fixed-rate lending through auctions is less familiar than variable-rate pools

Fixed rates through auctions

Term Finance is a non-custodial fixed-rate lending protocol modelled on tri-party repo arrangements, matching lenders and borrowers through weekly sealed-bid Term Auctions and monitoring collateral health and liquidations on-chain. The fixed-rate, auction-based design is genuinely distinct from the variable-rate pools that dominate on-chain lending.

A licence worth reading closely

The main contracts repository carries a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 licence. That is not an open-source licence: it forbids commercial use and derivative works, and is more restrictive than any BUSL in this comparison, which at least converts to open source on a date. The code is readable but tightly restricted, and the licence score reflects that.

Audits strong, fees unclear

Six audit firms are named and dated — Sigma Prime, Runtime Verification, Dedaub and ChainLight — a solid record. But the fees page names only two fee types, a loan servicing fee and liquidated damages, without the amounts, which did not render in the content we read. The review reports the types and states plainly that the figures could not be verified.

The company behind it

Term Finance is developed by Term Labs, whose documentation openly lists its team: Dion Chu as chief executive, Robert Chu as chief technology officer, Dai Yu as chief financial officer, Billy Welch on business development and Andrew Zhou as lead smart-contract engineer. The TERM token governs the protocol on chain. Naming the full team on the docs is more disclosure than most fixed-rate lending protocols offer, and it is the kind of accountability that matters where loan terms are set by auction.
