Scores
Each criterion carries equal weight. The overall score is the average of these 5 scores — (6.0 + 4.0 + 5.0 + 4.0 + 7.0) ÷ 5 = 5.2.
Pros
- Circulation data published daily
- Quarterly attestation reports issued by a named firm, BDO Italia
- Substantial disclosed US Treasury bill holdings
- By far the largest circulating supply and deepest market presence
Cons
- Attestation is quarterly where most competitors here attest monthly
- Reserves have included secured loans, which pure cash and T-bill issuers do not hold
- No named prudential regulator supervises the issuer
- Custodian banks are not named
- The transparency page itself does not set out reserve composition
Scale is not the same as disclosure
Tether states all tokens are pegged 1-to-1 and backed 100% by its reserves, with assets exceeding liabilities, and publishes token circulation daily. Attestation reports are produced quarterly by BDO Italia — a named firm, which is to its credit, but a quarterly cadence against the monthly one used by Gemini, Circle, Paxos, PayPal and Ripple.
What sits in the reserve
Tether's own releases describe large US Treasury bill holdings alongside secured loans, and note reductions in the latter over time. Secured loans are a materially different asset to cash or short-dated bills, and no other issuer in this comparison holds them.
The unsupervised issuer
No prudential regulator is named for the issuing entity, and custodians are not identified. For the largest stablecoin by supply, the gap between market position and documented oversight is the single most striking finding in this category.
