Aerodrome Finance chart
Aerodrome Finance is the leading decentralized exchange and liquidity hub on Base, Coinbase's Layer 2 network. It uses a vote-escrow ve(3,3) design where locking AERO directs trading incentives and earns fees, aligning liquidity providers with the protocol.

What is Aerodrome Finance?
Aerodrome is a decentralized exchange and central liquidity marketplace built on Base, the Ethereum Layer 2 incubated by Coinbase. It lets users swap tokens and provide liquidity, and it acts as the routing layer that concentrates much of Base's on-chain liquidity in one place. Aerodrome evolved from the Velodrome model pioneered on Optimism, applying a tokenomics design that ties emissions to community voting. Its role as core infrastructure makes AERO closely linked to the health of the wider Base ecosystem.
How does Aerodrome work?
Aerodrome uses a ve(3,3) vote-escrow model. Users lock AERO to receive veAERO, which grants voting power over how weekly token emissions are distributed across liquidity pools. Voters earn the trading fees and incentives (bribes) from the pools they support, so capital flows to where demand is highest. Liquidity providers earn AERO emissions, while lockers capture real fee revenue. This flywheel is meant to bootstrap deep liquidity, though it depends on continuous emissions to keep participants engaged.
What drives the AERO price?
AERO price tracks trading volume on Base, the amount of AERO locked as veAERO, and the emissions schedule that dilutes holders who do not lock. Growth in Base activity, new token launches and rising total value locked increase demand for AERO voting power. Conversely, high emissions add sell pressure if fee revenue and locking do not keep pace. Incentive campaigns, Coinbase-driven ecosystem growth and overall DeFi liquidity conditions are the main catalysts.
Risks to consider
Aerodrome's model depends on continuous emissions; if locking and fee revenue fall behind, dilution pressures the token. It is tightly coupled to Base, so its fortunes rise and fall with that single ecosystem. Smart-contract exploits, mercenary liquidity that leaves when incentives drop, and intense competition among DEXs are real threats. ve(3,3) tokenomics are also complex and can misalign if bribe markets distort emissions.
Aerodrome Finance FAQ
Is Aerodrome a good investment?
Aerodrome is central infrastructure on Base with real fee revenue, but its emissions-driven model and single-ecosystem exposure carry dilution and competition risk. Suitability depends on your view of Base and your risk tolerance. This is information, not financial advice.
What is veAERO?
veAERO is vote-escrowed AERO, created by locking AERO for a chosen period. It grants voting power over weekly emissions and entitles holders to the trading fees and incentives from the pools they vote for.
Why is Aerodrome linked to Base?
Aerodrome is built on Base and serves as its primary liquidity layer, so its trading volume, fees and token demand rise and fall with activity across the Base ecosystem.
